Nau Mai, Haere Mai – Welcome!

Kia ora and a warm welcome to Aotearoa for the fib Symposium 2024.

The sequence of devastating earthquakes that Christchurch experienced in 2010 and 2011 destroyed the city centre and hundreds of buildings, schools, hospitals and essential infrastructure were demolished. Yet, the city re-established essential functions quickly and in the last decade, major reconstruction implementing seismic resilient designs and innovative technologies has seen Christchurch rebuilt.

The title of the Symposium is ReConStruct - Resilient Concrete Structures and will be hosted by Concrete New Zealand – Learned Society.

It is our pleasure to host the fib 2024 Symposium for the first time in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we invite you to join us in Christchurch.  Known as the Garden City, Christchurch will be in the throes of Spring - its most beautiful season.

In addition to resilient structures, sustainable design is a key focus with New Zealand committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In fact, Concrete NZ has recently published its 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap. The conference will provide an opportunity to share expertise and develop strategies to achieve these goals as an international community.

Getting here is easy, ex Europe you can stopover in Singapore or Hong Kong then direct into Christchurch or alternatively fly via U.S. See our destination page on the website for more information on getting here.

While you are here, we hope you will take a few days to venture out into the hinterland to explore and enjoy the myriad beautiful places that New Zealand offers – many within 2 hours drive.

We look forward to showcasing to the global concrete community, many examples of excellence in the field of resilience to natural hazards, innovative concrete technologies, and seamless implementation between research and industry.  Having been tested by nature, Christchurch is perfectly pitched to host this international event, as it emerges from testing times.

We invite you to experience everything that this magical region has to offer.   Keep up to date with news by registering your interest.
